UAE Introduces Automatic Passport and Emirates ID Renewals for Eligible Citizens

The UAE has launched a new initiative to automatically renew passports and Emirates ID cards for eligible citizens, further strengthening the country’s commitment to smart government services and citizen-centric digital transformation.

The initiative has been introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) and is designed to simplify administrative processes for senior citizens and people of determination enrolled in the social support programme.

Proactive, Digital-First Public Services

Under the new system, the authority will proactively monitor the expiry dates of passports and Emirates ID cards for eligible beneficiaries. Documents approaching expiration will be renewed automatically, without requiring the individual to submit an application or visit a service centre.

Once the renewal process is completed, beneficiaries will be notified that their documents have been updated. An authorised employee will then deliver the renewed documents directly to the individual’s home, ensuring a seamless and accessible service experience.

Enhancing Accessibility and Social Inclusion

The initiative reflects a broader policy focus on reducing administrative burdens for vulnerable groups and ensuring equal access to essential government services. By eliminating the need for physical visits, paperwork, and manual follow-ups, the programme enhances convenience while safeguarding dignity and independence for senior citizens and people of determination.

It also supports the UAE’s social protection framework by integrating public services with social support programmes, ensuring continuity of legal identity and documentation.

Aligning with the UAE’s Smart Government Vision

The automatic renewal programme is part of the UAE’s wider efforts to digitise government services, improve service efficiency, and shift towards anticipatory governance, where public authorities act before services are requested.

By leveraging data-driven monitoring and automated processes, the ICP continues to modernise identity and citizenship services in line with national digital transformation goals.

A Model for Future Public Service Delivery

The initiative sets a benchmark for how governments can use technology to deliver proactive, inclusive, and human-centric services. As the UAE continues to enhance its digital governance ecosystem, similar models may be expanded to additional services and beneficiary categories.

The move underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to balance technological advancement with social responsibility ensuring that innovation translates into tangible benefits for citizens.
