Desert Agriculture Project in Sharjah: Gheras Strengthens UAE Food Security

Agriculture Project

Gheras Agricultural Company has announced the strategic expansion of its integrated desert farming project in Al Dhaid, Sharjah, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable agriculture, innovation, and long-term food security in the United Arab Emirates.

The expansion represents a significant advancement in Gheras’ vision to develop commercially viable farming systems tailored specifically for arid and semi-arid climates. By integrating cultivation, processing, renewable energy, and agricultural education within a single platform, the company is establishing a scalable model designed to meet both environmental and market demands.

Advancing Climate-Smart Agricultural Solutions

The initial phase of the project spans three hectares and is projected to produce approximately 10 tonnes of crops annually. Upon full completion, total production capacity is expected to reach up to 250 tonnes per year, contributing meaningfully to domestic agricultural output.

Engineered to address the unique challenges of desert farming, the facility incorporates advanced irrigation systems, precision farming technologies, and solar-powered infrastructure. These solutions significantly reduce water and energy consumption—by up to 70 percent while maintaining high productivity levels. The integration of smart farming systems ensures efficient resource management, improved crop yields, and long-term operational sustainability.

Integrated Model: Farming, Processing, and Education

Beyond cultivation, the project includes dedicated food processing infrastructure, enabling value addition within the local supply chain. This vertically integrated approach enhances efficiency, reduces waste, and supports the development of a resilient agricultural ecosystem.

The initiative also emphasizes knowledge transfer and workforce development. Educational and training components are embedded within the project framework, promoting modern agricultural practices and supporting the growth of expertise in climate-resilient farming technologies.

Supporting National Sustainability Goals

Located in Sharjah’s established agricultural hub of Al Dhaid, the expansion aligns closely with the UAE’s national food security strategy and broader sustainability objectives. By increasing local production capacity and deploying resource-efficient technologies, Gheras is contributing to reduced import reliance and enhanced supply chain stability.

Long-Term Vision and Impact

The phased development strategy reflects Gheras’ long-term investment approach prioritizing innovation, infrastructure, and environmental responsibility. As global pressures on food systems intensify due to climate change and resource scarcity, the company’s integrated desert agriculture model offers a forward-looking solution adaptable to similar regions worldwide.

Through this expansion, Gheras continues to position itself at the forefront of sustainable agribusiness in the region, transforming desert landscapes into productive, technology-enabled agricultural assets that deliver economic, environmental, and social value.
